Air Brake Tips

Frequently asked questions

What is an air brake system?+

An air brake system uses compressed air to apply the brakes. It's commonly installed in commercial trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles.

Why is air brake training important?+

It helps drivers understand system components, conduct inspections, recognize defects, and operate air-brake-equipped vehicles safely.

What should I check before driving?+

Check the air-pressure gauges, warning devices, air leakage, brake response, compressor operation, and parking brake during your pre-trip inspection.

What does a low-air-pressure warning mean?+

It means the system's air pressure has dropped below a safe level. Stop the vehicle safely and have the system inspected before continuing.

How often should air brakes be inspected?+

Every pre-trip inspection. Regular professional maintenance should also follow the vehicle manufacturer's schedule and applicable regulations.

What can cause air pressure to drop?+

Common causes include leaking hoses, loose connections, damaged valves, worn components, or problems with the air compressor.
